We fully realize there are five words most people don't want to hear: "You need a root canal." We want you to think about five other words: "You can keep your tooth!!" Root canal treatment is a relatively simple procedure involving one to three office visits, and is still the best way we have to restore a badly damaged or infected tooth so you won't have to lose it. Even a tooth that looks and feels normal may need this service to avoid more serious problems that will lead to loss of the tooth.

What is the purpose of having root canal treatment?

A tooth's nerve is not vitally important to a tooth's health and function after the tooth has emerged through the gums. Its only function is sensory – to provide the sensation of hot or cold. The presence or absence of a nerve will not affect the day-to-day functioning of the tooth.

When a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity, bacteria can enter the pulp tissue and germs can cause an infection inside the tooth. If left untreated, an abscess may form. If the infected tissue is not removed, pain and swelling can result. This can not only injure your jawbones, but it is detrimental to your overall health. Without the proper treatment from your Columbia, MO dentist, your tooth may have to be removed.

What are the signs that a root canal is needed?

Teeth that require root canal therapy are not always painful. However, signs you may need a root canal include severe toothache, pain upon chewing or application of pressure, prolonged sensitivity or pain in response to hot and cold temperatures, a dark discoloration of the tooth, and swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your family dentist in Columbia.

The Benefits Of Root Canal Therapy

  • Health Benefits: Root canals get rid of harmful infection before it can spread to your other teeth, or cause serious health problems.
  • A Lasting Smile: Using a root canal, your dentist can save a tooth that would normally require extraction and help your smile last longer.
  • Comfort and Relief: Root canals provide comfort and relief for patients who are suffering from a serious, chronic tooth infection. Your root canal will alleviate your toothache and all of the other symptoms that have been making your day-to-day life more difficult.

Root Canal Procedure

First, and most important, we will make sure all of your questions have been answered before you undergo any treatment. Your comfort is very important to us. Dr. Alex Stanley will make every effort to minimize any pain you might experience. In fact, most people say they didn't have any pain! We are very proud of that fact! You will likely have a mouth prop placed between your back teeth to help you keep open and rest your jaw muscles and a rubber sheet (called a dental dam) placed around your tooth to isolate it from contamination and protect your airway.

We will use various devices and products to fully cleanse, disinfect, shape, and fill each canal in every root. Our goal is long-term success and function, therefore, you will need a final restoration (most often a crown) to finish and protect the tooth. You may be prescribed medication before and/or after your procedure.

Dr. Stanley makes every effort to make all root canal treatment as painless as possible with superior outcomes. Call Columbia Center For Dentistry in Columbia, MO today at (573) 446-2687 to learn more or schedule an appointment!
