Unfortunately, sometimes a tooth needs to be removed. This is generally a last resort since we have so many ways to save your natural teeth. An extraction can be a rather complex procedure. Many times the roots are firmly embedded in the jawbone. Some teeth have up to four roots that must all be removed using a surgical procedure including cutting and stitches. Don’t let this scare you; we will do everything we can to make you comfortable during the process. When a tooth is lost, the other teeth in that area are prone to shifting and the jawbone will “melt” away over time. We almost always will recommend a way to restore the empty space. In cases where an implant will be used to replace the missing tooth, we may recommend a bone graft (see “Bone Grafting” in the drop down menu) to maintain the bone that is lost from the extraction.
